The vast majority of Pitane’s coinage of the “Zeus Ammon / pentagram” type features an ethnic on the reverse. This rare specimen probably carries the name of a magistrate.

(BC 182-149) Prusias II - Tetradrachm 733 viewsPrusias II Cynegos, 182-149 BC. AR Tetradrachm (16.79g, 12h), Nikomedeia mint. Head of Prusias right, with slight beard and wearing winged diadem / ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΠΡΟΥΣΙΟΥ, Zeus standing left, half draped, crowning king's name with an olive wreath held in his right hand and holding a long scepter in his left; to left, eagle standing left on thunderbolt over monogram. aEF. PGB coll.

Prusias II was a king about whom little good can be said. His epithet means “the Hunter” and that was the activity he liked most. As his reign went on, he became more and more disliked; he was killed after his much more attractive son Nikomedes revolted against him and took over the throne to universal acclaim.

PGB coll., acquired in early 1970s.

Artumpara was a late satrap or dynast of Lycia who was involved in putting down the revolt of Datames; he himself seems to have been defeated by Perikle, who at one point ruled over most of Lycia.

Magnesia (BC 155-145) Octobol995 viewsca 155-145 BC. AR Octobol (5.50g, 1h), Dionysios son of Demetrios. Armored cavalryman, wearing helmet, holding couched lance in his right hand and with his cloak flowing back from his shoulders, riding horse prancing to right; Δ below / ΜΑΓΝΗΤΩΝ ΔΙΟΝΥΣΙΟΣ ΔΗΜΗΤΡΙΟΥ, bull butting left, within circular maeander pattern. Very rare. Virtually as struck. Ex Gemini I (1/2005), 162 and Lanz 102 (5/2001), 267, and from the collections of The Johns Hopkins University and J. W. Garrett, Bank Leu and Numismatic Fine Arts (10/1984), 266, C. S. Bement, Naville VII (6/1924), 1458 and T. Prowe, Egger 46 (5/1914), 949, and ex Hirsch 16 (12/1906), 636.

The letter delta on the obverse is the denomination mark and stands for four diobols or an octobol (smaller pieces valued at two and four obols are also known). These coins were primarily for local use at the time when the city produced its extensive issues of stephanophoric tetradrachms.

Uncertain (BC 600-550) EL Hekte2240 viewsca 600-550 BC. EL Hekte (2.73g), probably on the Phokaian weight standard. Scorpion / Irregular incuse square. Apparently unpublished and unknown. Some minor marks, otherwise EF. Ex Gorny & Mosch 190 (10/2010), 245.

This is an extraordinary piece, quite clearly on the Phokaian standard (as is the piece in the Leu sale - there are lighter electrum pieces with scorpions, as Weidauer 170, but they seem to be on the Milesian standard). The possibility that this piece may have been produced in Thrace or Macedon, given the well known bee that is found on uncertain silver coins from that area (CNG Auction 88, 75) is not unlikely, especially given the rather rough incuse square. There is also a very similar scorpion on some slightly later silver coins that are now also attributed to northern Greece since some have been found there (as SNG Copenhagen 377 and SNG con Aulock 6664 - both published as being from Asia Minor).

The attribution of this so far unknown issue to the Aeolian Myrina and not to the city of Myrina on Lemnos is due to the fact that from the latter there are only known bronzes from the end of the Hellenistic period. The Aeolian Myrina on the other hand struck silver coins of Alexander types at the end of the 4th c. BC. and had a quite large coinage from the 2nd c. BC. onwards. The style of the head on the obv. makes a date to the end of the classical period plausible, one could compare it with issues of Mytilene (cf. Bodenstedt 90 or 109) or Phocaea (cf. Bodenstedt 94 or 162). The iconography of the rev. is not surprising: the stag is the symbol of Artemis, of whom worship is attested. The goddess is represented on hemidrachms of about 300 BC. (cf. ZfN 3 [1876], pl. VIII, 17).
