Oinoanda (BC 200) Didrachm - Series 3751 viewsca 200 BC. AR Didrachm (20mm, 7.58g, 12h). Laureate head of Zeus right; B (erased in die) and scepter behind / Eagle standing right on thunderbolt; Γ to left; to right, sword behind shield. EF, dark find patina. Rare. Winokur Coll.

This short series of coinage from Oinoanda was apparently struck in three series, each marked with A, B, or Γ. Originally these letters were thought to represent dates on a local era, but Ashton’s study shows this is far from conclusive, regardless that they were struck sequentially. The obverse die used for this coin was originally used for series 2 didrachms, which have a B on the obverse.

(BC 340-334) Pixodaros - Tetradrachm964 viewsPixodaros, Satrap, 340-334 BC. AR Tetradrachm (15.10g, 12h). Head of Apollo facing slightly right, wearing laurel wreath / ΠΙΞΟΔΑΡΟΥ, Zeus Labraundos standing right, holding labrys and lotus-tipped scepter; small E between feet and sceptre. EF, toned, some minor roughness on the reverse. Very rare. Cohen Coll.

The obverse die on this coin was also used to strike tetradrachms in the name of Hidrieus. The die sharing and the carry-over from Hiedreius' issues of the small E on the reverse suggest that Pixodaros' tetradrachms were struck early in his reign.

Obols and Diobols are well-known from the emission of small coins assigned convincingly to the Carian Satrap Hekatomnos. A. Winzer, Antike Portraitmünzen (2005), No. 13, argues that some portray the Satrap himself, while others Zeus Lepsynos.

Gergis (BC 480-450) Hemidrachm2189 viewsca 480-450 BC. AR Hemidrachm (2.07g, 6h). Sphinx seated right / Gorgoneion in circular incuse. VF, toned, granular surfaces, irregular flan. Extremely rare, apparently the third known.

In the early-mid 5th century BC, Abydos and Kebren used a very similar reverse type on their coinages, paired with their civic badge on the obverse, an eagle (Abydos) and ram’s head (Kebren). Kebren’s coins of this type typically do not include the city ethnic. The present coin employs the city’s badge, a sphinx, on the obverse, a stylistically similar gorgoneion on the reverse, and no ethnic. The existence of now 3 cities in the Troad striking common coinage suggests that there may have been a monetary alliance or symmachy in existence among them. While it is possible that this coin was minted by another city, the fabric and overall style are consistent with the early coins of Abydos and Kebren. Further, the present coin appeared on the market alongside an early coin of Gergis with a clear ethnic.

A few very rare issues of electrum have a lion forepart on a horizontally-striated field (cf. CNG 69, lots 444 and 447), but this is apparently the first appearance of lion’s head on a vertically-striated field.
