Kyzikos (BC 550-500) EL Hekte597 viewsca 550-500 BC. EL Hekte (2.69g, 10.5mm). Head of Perseus to left, wearing winged helmet with hair hanging beneath and represented by dots; behind, tunny swimming downwards / Quadripartite incuse square. VF. A rare type with about 20 known. Carr coll.

William Greenwell, in his 1887 tome entitled: The electrum coinage of Cyzicus, notes that the helmet is the helmet of Hades lent to him by the nymphs. The reference by Greenwell is to the ‘mission’ of Perseus to cut-off the head of Medusa. The next coin in the Greenwell listing notes a type where much of the detail of this slaying is depicted – see Coin ID #14069.

Kyzikos (BC 390-340) Drachm?464 viewsca 3rd century BC. AR Drachm(?) (5.07g, 20mm). Head of Kore Soteira left, with hair in sphendone; ΣΩTEIPA / Head of lion left; monogram to left; below, tunny left; KYZI.

The weight of this piece is significantly heavier than SNG BN 408-10, which are closer to 3.25g. Additionally, the obverse style is much closer to the following series featuring the seated Apollo reverse type. BN 419 fits the obverse style and weight, but is of the later reverse type, pointing to a possible hybrid or transitional issue. Very rare and interesting. Very fine, some porosity.

AR Cistophoric Tetradrachm (27mm, 12.83g), struck at Thyateira, dated year 1 (of his revolt, 133/2 BC). Cista mystica with serpent; all within ivy wreath / Bowcase between two serpents; ΘVA to left. Controls: BA-EY across field, horizontal winged thunderbolt above, A (date) below to left; to right, head (of Dionysos?) right. gVF.

A pretender to the Pergamene throne following the death of Attalos III, Aristonikos, adopting the name Eumenes III and claiming to be the son of Eumenes II, secured the kingdom for a brief period, issuing a series of Cistophoroi from Thyateira, Apollonis and Stratonikeia. Attalos had bequeathed the kingdom to the Romans, but they were slow to recognize this fact, and Aristonikos took advantage. Though dated coinage is known for years 2-4, years 1 and 5 are extremely rare, with just a couple specimens known.

Good VF, toned, light porosity. Very rare.

This issue was attributed to the island of Syros based on the reverse legend. Recent scholarship, however, has convincingly shown that this is erroneous, as the reverse legend does not contain an ethnic, but names the type: the Divine Syrian Kaberioi. As the issue has long been linked to a rare portrait emission of Eumenes I with the same reverse type, it is clear that it must belong to a mint in the sphere of the kings of Pergamon. Although it is tempting to attribute it to the royal mint at Pergamon, this Attic-standard issue could have been struck at one of several mints under Attalid control. See A. Meadows, “The Closed Currency System of the Attalid Kingdom” in P. Thonemann, Attalid Asia Minor (Oxford, 2013), pp. 184–91 for the most current analysis.

Miletopolis (BC 100-AD 100) AE 22234 viewsAxiochos, 1st century BC-1st century AD. AE22 (7.04g, 1h). O DHMOC AXIOXO[N], laureate head right; two owl countermarks / [MIL]HTOPOLIT[WN], helmeted head of Athena right. Coin: VF, dark brown patina, an area of minor roughness; c/m's: Good VF.

While the portrayal on the obverse may be the individual Axiochus or the Demos of Miletopolis, the obverse inscription makes it clear that this coin was struck to honor one of that city’s benefactors. By following Greek epigraphic convention, the name of the dedicatee (AXIOCON) is placed in the accusative case, while the verb is not indicated, but implied: “The Demos honors Axiochus.” Just who this Axiochus was remains a mystery. The name is known in the Greek world (a dialogue of the same name ascribed to Plato is known), and several Romanized Axiochi are attested in inscriptions and graffiti (cf. CIL VI.13.19 - Sex. Pompeius Axiochus). Axiochus was likely one of the numerous euergetai, or benefactors of the Roman Empire: wealthy individuals who supported public projects, or liturgies, in their hometowns. They alleviated the burden of the imperial treasury, while at the same time improving their standing.

Known type for a stater (at least 10 sold at auction, see Coin ID #9333 and #6817), hekte (1/6th Stater) (at least 12 sold at auction, see Coin ID #9330 and #9332), hemihekte (1/12th Stater) (at least 9 sold at auction, see Coin ID #9329) and Myshemihekte (1/24th Stater) (at least 6 sold at auction, see Coin ID #11022). In some instances, it appears that the die for the stater was used on hekte and, as such, the tuna is off the flan. This example is from an unknown die. In some cases, Attis is wearing a conspicuously jeweled Phyrgian cap (see Coin ID #9332) and in others, the jewels are less conspicuous or absent.
