Persian Kings (BC 420-375) Daric222 viewsXerxes II to Artaxerxes II, ca 420-375 BC. AV Daric (16.88mm length, 15.10mm width, 3.49mm profile, 8.39g). Sardeis mint, Lydo-Milesian standard. Persian king wearing kidaris and kandys, quiver over shoulder, in kneeling running stance right, holding spear in right hand and bow in left / Rectangular wave-like patterned incuse. EF with luster, well centered and unusually well struck. Carr coll.

The reverse punch of this coin is uncommon for a Daric, but similar to that used for a Double Daric with its rectangular ‘wave-like’ patterned incuse.

A quantity of these have appeared on the market over the past few years, usually erroneously attributed to Akanthos, a city that never depicted a calf on its coinage. Moreover, the style of the calf, as well as the form of the incuse, is unlike any other coins attributed to that city.

The head on the reverse is similar to the archaic heads found on the early silver fractions of Kolophon (see Kim & Kroll), but the fact of it being incuse, and the obverse type, which is not likely at Kolophon, makes an assignment to that mint unlikely. Silver fractions of this type, obverse figure in relief, reverse in incuse, are typically found in early issues from the Troad (esp. Dardanos), but the types on this issue are not identified with any of those mints in particular.

Uncertain (BC 500-450) cow - Hemistater?384 views5th century BC. AR (6.05g). Cow standing left, head reverted, calf suckling right / Incuse head of African man left. Gemini sale 4, 2008, 195 (these dies). Of the highest rarity, apparently only the second known. Lightly toned, EF.

A mint in Caria or Lycia in the 5th century BC has been suggested, and its weight of 6.05 grams suggests it was intended as a half-stater of the Aeginetan or Samian standard. The most likely influence might have been the electrum sixths of Phocaea attributed by Bodenstedt (Ph24 and Ph54) to before 522 BC and to the period 477-388 BC. This might be especially relevant since the Phocaean sister-coinage of Mytilene of ca 521-455 BC uses for its reverses the heads of animals and the head of Heracles, all of which are rendered incuse.

Persian Kings (BC 333-331) Double Daric235 viewsTime of Darios III, ca 333-331 BC. AV Double Daric (20mm, 16.53g). Persian king in kneeling-running stance right, quiver over shoulder, holding dagger in right hand, bow in left / Incuse patterned rectagonal punch. Near VF. Extremely rare issue without control marks, only the BM and Sunrise pieces published.

Carradice lists this issue among late double darics attributed as Alexandrine issues. But Nicolet-Pierre, in her article on Alexandrine gold and silver at Babylon, does not mention any Type IV late double darics, only pieces similar to Type III, and all include control marks. This coin, like the Sunrise and BMC examples, shows no sign of control marks of Alexandrine coinage, and the style is closer to darics that Carradice gives to Artaxerxes II to Darios III. Thus, it is possible that this was a very late, if not the last, Achaemenid issue, just prior to the defeat of Darios III. It was probably struck at the same Babylonian mint that later issued double darics under Alexander, and may have provided coinage to the Persian king in Babylonia, as his western mints were no longer under his control. Regardless, it is from the first coinage struck in Babylon.

This puzzling coin is clearly in the same series as a small group of silver fractions of identical types and style that have trickled onto the market over the past five years with weights averaging 1.12g. Although the types suggest an origin in Asia Minor (e.g. Kyzikos), anecdotal information suggests an area further east in the region of Baktria. The weight is also mysterious - it does not seem to bear any clear relationship to the weight standards prevalent in the eastern Mediterranean, but is almost exactly three times the weight of the silver fractions, suggesting that the coins may have been intended to circulate locally in a closed exchange area rather than as part of the international financial system. The unusual weight on an apparent local standard supports the suggestion that this issue should be attributed to some region in central Asia remote from western commerce.
