Isinda (AD 244-249) AE 43 - Philip I568 viewsPhilip I, 244-249 AD. AE43 - Medaillon (41.39g). AVT KAI MAP IOV CЄOVH ΦIΛIPPOC CЄ, laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right; below, globe in between two branches / ICINΔЄΩN EΦECIΩN / OMONOIA, bearded local hero with spear entwined by snake clasping hands with cult statue of Artemis Ephesia. Exremely rare. Unpublished. Beautiful dark green patina, good very fine.

This coin being the only proof of an before unknown alliance (homonoia) connection in between Isinda and Ephesos. The inhabitans of Isinda traced their origins back to Ionia. Other contemporary coins propagate (Aulock, Pisidien Nr. 868ff.) their Ionian descent. On the reverse of our coin, the local hero is clasping hands with the cult statue of Artemis Ephesia. This hero from which no name is known is normally depicted on horseback, also always accompanied by snake. Where the hero might have been described as “the snakekiller” our coin makes this impossible as here the snake is peacefully entwining the hero’s staff. Hans von Aulock was right to describe the animal as a local protective deity. The serpent staff reminds of the Asklepios staff so it is save to assume that our local deity must have been a heeling god.

Lysinia (AD 193-211) AE 36 - Septimius Severus956 viewsSeptimius Severus, 193-211 AD. AE36 (25.17g, 6h). Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / Zeus enthroned left, holding phiale and scepter, supported by two anguipede males, each holding a cornucopia. Good VF, black-green patina with orange overtones in the devices, small spots of green deposits on reverse. Extremely rare, only the second one known, and nicer than the Boston specimen.

The reverse of this coin recalls the second major conflict of Zeus’ rise to power. After he had defeated the Titans in the Titantomachy and apportioned their former relatives to his fellow Olympians, he was compelled to resolve a conflict with the Giants, offspring of Gaia and Cronus. Known as the Gigantomachy, these chthonic half-man, half-serpent creatures attempted to wrestle power from the Olympians by casting them out of Olympus. To accomplish this, the Giants attempted to reach Olympus by heaping up one mountain range on top of the other. From above, Zeus and the other Olympians defended themselves by hurling their weapons. In the end, however, it was the assistance of Hercules, that won the day. With the final defeat of the Giants, the rule of Zeus was no longer challenged.
