Phaselis (BC 27-AD 14) AE 17 - Augustus404 viewsAugustus (?), 27 BC-14 AD. AE17 (3.25g). Laureate bust right, A behind / ΦA-CH, Athena advancing right, brandishing spear and shield. Possibly unpublished. VF.

Phaselis was a port-city located in Lycia and the only strictly Greek city in the entire province. It was founded by the Rhodians in 690 BC during a period of expansion. This coin embodies the turn of Phaselis from a Greek city into a Roman colony. It bears the portrait of an early emperor (perhaps Augustus due to the style and presence of "A" behind the bust), but also similar reverse to earlier Grecian bronzes. The city ethnic is more complete here, reading "ΦA-CH" rather than "ΦA" on the Grecian types. This coin seems unpublished, and there are no records of a similar specimen. Provincials of Phaselis are so rare that very few publications delve into them at all.

The present coin is the first to feature the profile lion obverse with a triskeles reverse.

(BC 370) Perikle - 1/6 Stater739 viewsPerikles, ca 380-360 BC. AR Sixth Stater (10mm, 1.18g, 9h). Wedrei mint. Lion right, biting into the hindquarter of a bull crouching left / Head of Athena facing slightly left, wearing crested Corinthian helmet adorned with sphinx on each side; triskeles to left. EF, toned, minor die break on reverse.

Many late Lycian dynastic coins bear legends on both sides that had long been assumed to be the names of two dynasts, who ostensibly issued joint coinages. However, more recent evidence has proved that names such as Wedrei, Zagaba, and Zemuri are actually names of cities, which are probably the mints of the respective issues they appear on (cf. A.G. Keen, Dynastic Lycia: A Political History of the Lycians & Their Relations with Foreign Powers, c. 545-362 BC [Leiden: Brill, 1998], pp. 109 and 154–5).

Lykia Uncertain (BC 380-370) Obol 327 viewsUncertain Dynast, ca 380-370 BC. AR Obol (10mm, 0.56g, 12h). Murex shell / Sea serpent (ketos?). VF, toned, porous. Extremely rare.

For an obol of Mithrapata with the same obverse type and style, cf. Klein 606 and BMC Lycia 8. While the similarity of the obverse of this type to the Mithrapata issue suggests an attribution to that dynast, all of his coins bear at least a portion of his name, and there are no letters on this coin. As types tend to be transferred from dynast to dynast, it is possible that this issue is from a contemporary of Mithrapata. The sea serpent, though, is not present on any published specimen of a Lycian dynast, which suggests that these coins may not be from the dynasts' series at all.

Phaselis (BC 550) Stater439 viewsca 550 BC. AR Stater (19mm, 10.88g). Prow of galley left, terminating in a forepart of a boar / Rough incuse punch. EF, toned. Apparently unique. Ex Princeton Economics, Armstrong (CNG E271, 1/2012, lot 21); Triton II (12/1998), lot 448.

This piece, with the prow in schematic style and a plain, rough incuse, clearly belongs to Heipp-Tamer’s first series. Only right-facing prow types had been previously known for this earliest phase of the mint (and Heipp-Tamer only knew of two coins - a stater and a drachm - for the entire series).
