Karia Uncertain (BC 480-450) Obol171 viewsca 5th cent BC. AR Diobol (1.19g, 8mm). Facing scalp of panther / Head of bull right within incuse square. gVF.

Though some hemidrachms from Samos feature a facing panther/bull head in profile, the weight of this piece is assuredly well below a hemidrachm and the style, especially of the bull, is much more similar to the uncertain 'bull' issues from Caria.

Karia Uncertain (BC 480-420) 1/4 Stater (?)319 viewsca 5th century BC. AR 1/4 Stater(?) (2.93g, 13mm, 12h). Lion standing left, head turned right, raising left forepaw / Forepart of bull (or boar?) right in dotted square within incuse square. Unpublished. Near EF, toned, patches of find patina. Apparently unique.

The obverse type is similar to the reverses of a Carian series featuring a winged male deity on the obverse (cf. SNG Kayhan 977–8 and Rosen 624), as well as an archaic Carian stater issue featuring a lion’s head turned back (cf. Dewing 2350–2). The type combination here also is commonly used on various issues in Caria; all attributed to uncertain mints.

Stratonikeia (BC 132-129) Tetradrachm302 viewsEumenes III (Aristonikos), Pretender to the throne of Pergamon, 132-130/29 BC. AR Cistophoric Tetradrachm (27mm, 12.48g). Dated year 5 (of his revolt = 129 BC). Cista mystica with serpent; all within ivy wreath / ΣΤΡΑ, bowcase between two serpents; BA to inner left, EY to inner right, E (date) in middle. VF. Apparently unpublished from year 5.

A pretender to the Pergamene throne following the death of Attalos III, Aristonikos, adopting the name Eumenes III and claiming to be the son of Eumenes II, secured the kingdom for a brief period, issuing a series of Cistophoroi from Thyateira, Apollonis and Stratonikeia. Attalos had bequeathed the kingdom to the Romans, but they were slow to recognize this fact, and Aristonikos took advantage. Though dated coinage is known for years 2-4, none had been previously known for year 5. The highly interesting example, which shares an obverse die with an issue from year 4, must represent the extremely rare group of coins struck at the outset of his short-lived final year in power before being captured, paraded through Rome and ultimately executed.

(BC 400-350) Uncertain Satrap - Tetartemorion755 viewsEarly-mid 4th cenutry BC. AR Tetartemorion(?) (6mm, 0.21g). Mylasa mint(?). Head of the Persian Great King left / Stellate pattern of Milesian style. Unpublished in the standard references. VF, porous. Extremely rare.

It is unlikely that this coin was part of a Persian-related issue at Miletos. In the early 4th century, however, the Milesian stellate pattern reverse was revived in the fractional coinage of the Hekatomnid satraps of Caria that were struck at Mylasa. These coins used the Milesian weight standard, which is likely the reason for their revival of that particular stellate type. There are a variety of issues from Caria during the Persian period that used Persian iconography, so it is likely that this coin belongs among these issues, and perhaps was struck under the Hekatomnids at Mylasa.

This coin celebrates the greatest citizen of Halikarnassos, Herodotos, who lived there in the mid-late 5th century BC. He was a great historian and for that time a 'journalist' who would travel around the Mediterranean to 'investigate' and interview people who actually had witnessed the events he wrote about.
