The imperial portrait coinage from Miletus with title CEBACTOC cannot be precisely assigned to ruler. Some portraits resemble Nero, others Titus, Domitian and Trajan. The portrait on this coin looks much like Tiberius, but the lunate form of “Σ” (i.e., “C”) found on this coin was not in use at Miletus until the reign of Nero.

This coin, one of six known staters of Phokaia, represents a new variety of type, in addition to a seal and two griffin head types recorded by Bodenstedt. It is certainly the most playful, with its depiction of a seal munching on a hapless cephalopod.

Magnesia (BC 210-200) Didrachm804 viewsca 210-200 BC. AR Didrachm (11.08g, 10h). Persic standard. Theodoros, son of Theogenes, magistrate. Good VF, a hint of porosity. Unpublished with monogram and this magistrate.

The weight and type of this piece clearly place it among the Persic standard didrachms detailed by Kinns, all of which are very rare. What is also significant about this piece is the addition of a monogram on the obverse, and the magistrate, who is unattested for all of the denominations during this period.

Samos (BC 600-570) EL Stater1916 viewsca 600-570 BC. EL Stater (17.22g). Uncertain design against a background of heavy filling ornament / Two parallel oblong incuse punches with irregular markings. VF. Ex Leu 77 (5/2000), lot 310.

The types of the early electrum of Samos are varied. The Samians had a unique style of coinage, with the central type placed against an amorphic patterned background. Various decriptions have been offered for the types-eagles, flowers, panthers, thunderbolts, etc. This cataloguer sees a flowering plant with two leaves, and a panther facing left below. The use of background ornament somewhat resembles the geometric patterns used as filling ornament on Corinthian pottery.
