Magnesia (BC 458-420) Tetrobol305 viewsca 465-400 BC. AR Tetrobol (15mm, 2.14g, 3h). Male figure standing front, head to left, leading with his right arm horse standing facing left, head to right / Eagle flying right; around, uncertain letters (?). Of the highest rarity, the better of two known. Slightly porous, otherwise VF.

CNG attributes this issue to 'Themistokles (?)', stating that it fits well into the coinage of Themistokles and Archepolis as described by Nollé and Wenniger. However, the letters on our example do not resemble the monograms of Themistokles or Archepolis, and the lack of a dotted square border and the style of the eagle point, in this cataloguer's opinion, to a somewhat later date.

Magnesia (BC 458-420) Trihemiobol180 viewsThemistokles(?), ca 465-459 BC. AR Obol (0.88g). Male figure standing left extending right arm to a horse standing facing, head left / Eagle flying right. Unpublished. VF, toned, struck from worn dies, minor porosity. Possibly unique.

This coin appeared in the market alongside known issues of Themistokles and his son, Archepolis, but does not appear in Nollé & Wenninger’s corpus of their coinage, nor has another appeared in the recent sales of their coinage. While the obverse type is novel, a similar reverse type of an eagle flying appears on issues of both rulers. Additionally, the general style and fabric of the flan is consistent with Themistokleian issues.

Dardanos (BC 300-100) AE 14211 views3rd-2nd century BC. AE14 (1.82g, 12h). Head of Hera(?) facing / ΔΑΡ, warrior (Hektor?) standing left, foot on prow, supporting shield and holding spear. Seemingly unpublished, perhaps unique. Brown patina, some roughness, aVF.

There is only one mint in the ancient Greek world whose name begins ΔΑΡ - Dardanos in the Troad. The coinage of Dardanos is scarce, and nearly all known types depict either cocks or horsemen, or a combination of both, until the very final issues struck during the late third and second centuries BC. This type appears to be completely new for the mint. The identification of the hero on the reverse is not certain, but other (albeit later) issues from the region do depict the hero Hektor in similar poses (see, e.g, Bellinger, Troy T162-4 and T212 [Ilium]).

Miletopolis (BC 100-AD 100) AE 22229 viewsAxiochos, 1st century BC-1st century AD. AE22 (7.04g, 1h). O DHMOC AXIOXO[N], laureate head right; two owl countermarks / [MIL]HTOPOLIT[WN], helmeted head of Athena right. Coin: VF, dark brown patina, an area of minor roughness; c/m's: Good VF.

While the portrayal on the obverse may be the individual Axiochus or the Demos of Miletopolis, the obverse inscription makes it clear that this coin was struck to honor one of that city’s benefactors. By following Greek epigraphic convention, the name of the dedicatee (AXIOCON) is placed in the accusative case, while the verb is not indicated, but implied: “The Demos honors Axiochus.” Just who this Axiochus was remains a mystery. The name is known in the Greek world (a dialogue of the same name ascribed to Plato is known), and several Romanized Axiochi are attested in inscriptions and graffiti (cf. CIL VI.13.19 - Sex. Pompeius Axiochus). Axiochus was likely one of the numerous euergetai, or benefactors of the Roman Empire: wealthy individuals who supported public projects, or liturgies, in their hometowns. They alleviated the burden of the imperial treasury, while at the same time improving their standing.

Mytilene (BC 377-326) EL Hekte - B-465 viewsca 377-326 BC. EL Hekte (2.57g, 11mm). Laureate head of Apollo right / Female head (Persephone and Hecate) right, wearing triangular earring, within linear square. gVF. Die rust on obverse die and die match for Coin ID# 13789. Carr coll.

This coin is unknown to Bodenstedt, but is the third to appear at auction. One cataloguer thought it to be a “mule” of B100 and B99. However, the reverse is different to B99 with the female wearing triangular earrings. Noting a new emission is important as it adds two extra years to the period of the emissions of hektai from Mytilene. If the emissions did cease with Alexander, then each coin unknown to Bodenstedt supports the view that hektai were issued earlier than he suggests. There are 13 new emissions that have appeared at auction that were unknown to Bodenstedt at the time of his catalogue.
