The ΔAK counterstamp is almost always found applied to the end of the obverse legend. It presumably was applied shortly after Trajan's assumption of the title Dacicus in late 102 AD. This is one of the few issues in the provincial series that actually spells out the name of the Province, in this case Ionia.

VF.

This medallion escaped the fate of many of Maximinus' surviving coins and medallions from Pergamum, which had their obverses scraped flat, presumably as damnatio memoriae after the emperor's death. So for example SNG Paris 2264 and 2272-3, the first of which has the variant of our reverse type lacking the urn with palm, from the same reverse die as the intact Paris 2263.

Nikaia (AD 193-217) AE 32 - Julia Domna389 viewsJulia Domna, Augusta, 193-217 AD. AE32 (23.36g). Struck 208/209 AD. IVΛIA CЄBACTH, draped bust right; c/m: Nike standing right holding wreath / A[ΓO]NOΘЄCIA, NIKAIEΩN in exergue, athlete seated left, holding prize crown in right hand, long palm in left; agonistic urn on ground before. Near VF, dark brown patina.

In 208/209 AD, the city of Nicaea celebrated the Philadelphian games to honor the fraternity of Caracalla and Geta. Numerous agonistic types are known, usually with the legend CEOVHPEIA ΦIΛAΔEΛΦEIA. This coin shares it's obverse die with a games coin which features on the reverse the busts of both Caracalla and Geta (RG 397). According to Head (Historia Numorum), the title Agonothesia refers to "The office of an Agonothetes" and is known on coins from Thessalonica and Gordus Julia. Jones (A Dictionary of Ancient Greek Coins) defines Agonothesia as "The holding of a contest, the chief organizer being known as the agonothetes. The reverse type is similar to the coin of Septimius in RG, pl. lxxvi 15 except that coin has the normal games legend for Nicaea at this time, CEOVHPEIA ΦIΛAΔEΛΦEIA and the athlete doesn't appear to be holding the palm branch.

Bithynia Uncertain (AD 69-79) AE 26 - Titus462 viewsKoinon of Bithynia. Titus, as Caesar, 69-79 AD. AE26 (10.19g). Under proconsul M. Salvidenus Asprenas. AYTOKPA TITOΣ KAIΣAP ΣEBAΣ YIOΣ, head laureate right, before oblong countermark with letters MHTB ligate / EΠI M [Σ]AΛ[OY]IΔIANOY AΣΠP[H]NA ANΘY, palm tree with seven branches; to left cuirass, helmet, and two spears; to right large round shield and two spears. VF. Ex Sneh Coll.; ex D. Markov, possibly ex Emporium 10, 1987, lot 56, which bears the same countermark according to RPC.

A rare Judaea Capta type on a provincial coin struck by a remote mint that was not directly affected by the war. The countermark, according to RPC, "may stand for μητροπολιc Βιθυνιαc, implying an attribution to Nicomedia".

Bithynia Uncertain (AD 79-81) AE 29 - Titus545 viewsTitus, 79-81 AD. AE29 (13.96 gm, 6h). Maecus Rufus); palm tree, on left cuirass, two spears, and helmet; on right two spears and shield. Good Very Fine. Ex Shoshana Coll.

This provincial Roman coin, attributed to the Koinon of Bithynia, is clearly related to the Jewish War. RPC II p. 97 notes that this coin has "...significance beyond Bithynia: the palm tree with obverse of Titus is a clear allusion to Titus' participation in the defeat of Judaea...”

Germanikopolis (AD 198-217) AE 27 - Caracalla589 viewsCaracalla, 198-217 AD. AE27 (14.32g, 6h). Laureate and cuirassed bust right / Cityscape: two civic buildings between two towers. VF, glossy green patina. Extremely rare and highly interesting type.

Richmond (“The Town of Germanicopolis-Gangra in Paphlagonia” NC 1929, pp. 310-2) describes the central structures on the reverse as two distinct buildings, perhaps the city’s forum and basilica, with a narrow alley running between. Robertson, however, suggests that they may represent a single gatehouse, an idea initially dismissed by Richardson due to the uncharacteristically pitched roofs. The current specimen lacks what seems to be a curved wall seen on the latter two specimens referenced above, but exhibits an even more pronounced break between the central structures. They cannot form a gate, and must therefore represent two civic buildings, the smaller of which is shown in perspective. The type can thus be interpreted as a cross-section of the city; the two side towers represent two opposite entrances, with a circular wall around (on at least some specimens), and depicting in the center what must have been among the most important civic buildings.

Mytilene (BC 377-326) EL Hekte - B-2000 viewsca 377-326 BC. EL Hekte (2.57g). Female head to right, her hair bound up with criss-crossing ribbons / Panathenaic amphora with pointed lid; to left, palm branch; all within linear frame. Apparently unpublished and unique. aEF.

This piece is apparently completely unknown and unrecorded by Bodenstedt. The reverse bears a large amphora with a lid: its shape is that of a ‘Panathenaic’, so-called from its use to store the olive oil given to winners at the Panathenaic Games in Athens. So, we must be looking at a prize amphora, a conclusion that is confirmed by the palm of victory that stands nearby. This means that the person depicted on the obverse of this coin must be Nike, goddess of victory. The rather sober hairstyle is also found on figures of Nike from Terina, Olympia, Kyzikos, Lampsakos and elsewhere. The very specific nature of the types on this coin implies that it was struck to commemorate the victory of someone.
