When the city asked the oracle of Klaros how it could protect itself from a pirate attack the oracle replied that Syedra should erect a propitiatory statue group, showing the warlike Ares (symbolizing the violence of a pirate attack) bound by Hermes and led by Dike (Justitia). This the city did and the base for the group apparently still exists at the site.

Babelon (Traité des monnaies Grecques et Romaines) describes the reverse as a wolf with a crescent before it, which would be easy to misinterpret from the poorly preserved specimen he plated. On the current and following lot, however, it is clear the animals are leashed. This and the following two lots no doubt refer to the royal hunt, with the prey on the obverse and the hunting companion – a hound – on the reverse.

Kyzikos (BC 600-550) EL Stater934 viewsca 600-550 BC. EL Stater (16.30g). Head of tunny fish left, jaws closed, backbone protruding from truncation at right. Below, tail of tunny fish / Quadripartite incuse square. Apparently unpublished denomination with this type. VF.

The tuna was the sole type on the earliest electrum coinage of Cyzicus, but the relationship between type variety and denomination was inconsistent. In some series a whole tuna indicated a stater and just part of the fish indicated a smaller denomination, but our coin is a stater and shows just the head and the tail of a tuna. In any case all staters of this early period are very rare, and this type seems to be unpublished.

While such coins are generally assigned to an uncertain Thraco-Macedonian mint, the style of the current coin is more refined than any of the horse types in Tzamalis. “Horse/incuse” types were almost certainly minted at multiple locations, and a mint in (western?) Asia Minor would seem logical based on provenances.
