The specimen Imhoof-Blumer cited was from his own collection. Because of the coin’s rarity, it was probably donated to the Berlin Münzkabinett, as it does not appear in the known sales of Imhoof-Blumer’s coins. The Berlin collection, however, remains unpublished, so there is no way of determining that coin’s further disposition.

Good VF, old cabinet toning. Extremely rare for magistrate, the second known without additional symbol on reverse.

The analysis of the 1996 Myndos hoard by B. Zabel and A.R. Meadows (CH IX, pp. 244–52) revealed three groups of issues, the first two of which included magistrate names and an additional symbol on the reverse, while the last group only had magistrate names. Kallikles is known to have struck hemidrachms in two issues, one with a cornucopia symbol, and one with no additional symbol. Of the former, there are approximately 13 coins known, all from a hoard in 1985 (CH VIII, 481). His second issue, without symbol, is apparently known only from a single specimen in a hoard found in 1987 (CH VIII, 495), which was struck from the same reverse die as the present coin.

VF, toned, typical areas of weak strike, some porosity. Very rare. Ex Cahn Coll.; Auctiones 8 (6/1978), lot 236.

This coin is from the earliest issue of coinage at Tenedos. Although some place this issue in the late 6th century, there are no coins of this type in any hoard recorded before the mid-5th century. In fact, only two 5th century hoards record coins of Tenedos: Troas, 1969 (IGCH 1188), deposited ca 450 BC, and Massyaf, 1961 (IGCH 1483 = CH 8, 587 = CH 9, 362), deposited ca 425-420 BC. The former contained two coins of Tenedos, but further information was not recorded. The second hoard contained a single didrachm, which was from the same issue as the present coin (cf. C.M. Kraay & P.R.S. Moorey, “Two fifth century hoards from the Near East,” RN 1968, pl. XXVI, 57). That coin exhibits little wear, supporting a likely date of issue in the early to mid 5th century BC.

Maionia (AD 193-211) AE 19553 viewsTime of Septimius Severus, 193-211 AD. AE19 (4.35g, 6h). Damas, magistrate. Bearded head of Hercules left / Omphale advancing right, wearing Hercules’ lion skin and carrying his club. VF, earthen green patina. Group CEM.

In expiation for his murder of Iphitos at Tiryns, Hercules was compelled by the Delphic oracle to serve Omphale, Queen of Lydia, for one year. During this time, he performed a number of labors, similar to those which he undertook while serving Eurystheus, including the capture of the Kerkopes, the killing of the Syleus, and the conquest of the city of the Itones. At the same time, he was forced to wear women’s clothing and spin wool and, according to the poet Ovid (Fasti 2.305), Omphale even wore Hercules’ lion skin and carried his club while ordering him about. However, these actions seemed to have little ill-effect on the hero; after his year’s service was completed, Hercules married Omphale.
