The style of the obverse of this type has a resemblance to similar hemihektes of Miletos (cf. SNG Kayhan 444–8), but the attribution of those pieces is based on their incuses, all of which have geometric shapes or pellets similar to the staters that are conclusively proven to have been from Miletos (cf. SNG Kayhan 440–1). Further study, however, may eventually prove the attribution of these plain-incuse issues to Miletos as well.

This early stater from Tarsos combines elements of Casabonne’s type D2 (obverse with horse in walking stance) and G1 (reverse with archer and city ethnic). Chronologically, these two periods are successive, which makes such a seeming “hybrid” reasonably possible.

Lykia Uncertain (BC 380-370) Obol 333 viewsUncertain Dynast, ca 380-370 BC. AR Obol (10mm, 0.56g, 12h). Murex shell / Sea serpent (ketos?). VF, toned, porous. Extremely rare.

For an obol of Mithrapata with the same obverse type and style, cf. Klein 606 and BMC Lycia 8. While the similarity of the obverse of this type to the Mithrapata issue suggests an attribution to that dynast, all of his coins bear at least a portion of his name, and there are no letters on this coin. As types tend to be transferred from dynast to dynast, it is possible that this issue is from a contemporary of Mithrapata. The sea serpent, though, is not present on any published specimen of a Lycian dynast, which suggests that these coins may not be from the dynasts' series at all.

This piece, with the prow in schematic style and a plain, rough incuse, clearly belongs to Heipp-Tamer’s first series. Only right-facing prow types had been previously known for this earliest phase of the mint (and Heipp-Tamer only knew of two coins - a stater and a drachm - for the entire series).

An interesting type which copies a very identifiable shrine found on the coinage of Antioch. The engraver even went so far as to copy the “Δ Є” found on the Antiochene types, which is generally thought to stand for the office of the emperor as tribune (Δημαρχικης Єξουςιας) or, more likely, for the four eparchies (Δ Єπαρχειων) which the Antiochene coinage would circulate in: Commagene, Coele-Syria, Syria, and Phoenicia.

This coin is quite possibly the first coin of Commodus issued anywhere. His earliest issues at Rome are conventionally dated to AD 175, but are certainly struck after he attained the title of Germanicus in AD 172. This coin, however, shares a reverse die with an issue of Lucius Verus (SNG France 807), and it is unlikely that this die would have been retained so long after Verus died in AD 169. As this piece does not exhibit significant die wear, it is more likely that it was struck concurrently with the issue of Verus, while Commodus was Caesar, ca AD 166-169.
