Ephesos (AD 117-138) AE 36 - Hadrian 657 viewsHadrian, 117-138 AD. AE36 - Medallion (33.62g, 12h). Struck 129 AD(?). ΑΔΡΙΑΝΟC ΚΑ-ICΑΡ ΟΛΥΜΠΙΟC, laureate and cuirassed bust right wearing aegis / Cult statue of Diana of Ephesus within ornate octostyle temple. Near VF, dark green surfaces, minor roughness.

The emperor Hadrian was granted many honorific titles by the Greeks, including "Savior," "Founder," "New Dionysus," "New Heracles," "Panhellenius," and "Savior of the World," but the epithet "Olympius" is perhaps the most presumptuous. During Hadrian’s visits to Athens early in AD 129, he visited the massive Temple of Zeus Olympius (also known as the Olympeion). The Historia Augusta reports that at this time Hadrian dedicated an altar to himself, by virtue of which he seems to have elected himself a god and to have invested himself with the powers of the Olympian Zeus. This issue was possibly struck on the occasion of Hadrian’s visit to Ephesos later the same year.

Kaisareia (AD 193-194) Drachm - Pescennius Niger619 viewsPescennius Niger, 193-194 AD. AR Denarius - Drachm (2.46g, 18mm, 12h). Caesarea mint. IMP CAES C PESC NIGER IVST AVG, laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right / ΔHMAPXI EΞ O VΠATOC, modius with grain ears. Fine, toned, porous, chipped at 12 o’clock from an attempted piercing. Very rare and important issue.

When Pescennius was proclaimed emperor by his troops in AD 193, he knew his reign as emperor would not be peaceful. He quickly set out to issue huge sums of denarii in his name to pay his troops and to win the loyalty of others. To do this, like so many before him, Pescennius reduced the fineness of his denarii to a point that they were equivalent to the Caesarean drachm. This coin provides a direct link to these events, combining a denarius obverse die and a drachm reverse die. This coin also presents clear evidence that both Antioch and Caesarea struck coins for Pescennius.

RPC (p. 492) notes: “A very large number of ‘magistrates’ sign the coins (of Philadelphia) under Caligula: fifteen are certainly attested for his four-year reign. They give themselves various different descriptions and titles: priest of Germanicus, Olympic victor, philopatris, grammateus, and in a number of cases philokaisar. The impression created by this variety is that the persons are mentioned just as individuals rather than as holders of any specific magistracy; alternatively, one might think in terms of a board of some kind, as at Hierapolis.”

Von Aulock only knew of one example for this type, and of only five coins for Annia Faustina from this mint. This coin appears to be the second known and the only in private hands. The monogram on the countermark can be expanded to TO PKA (= year 121, equivalent to AD 243/4). Howgego records that the countermark appears on issues of Laodicea for Julia Domna, Caracalla, Elagabalus, and Severus Alexander as Caesar.

Alexandreia (AD 222-235) AE 24 - Severus Alexander321 viewsSeverus Alexander, 222-235 AD. AE24 (7.14g, 12h). Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / Hercules wrestling the giant Antaeus, whom he is lifting off the ground. Fine, rough brown and green patina. Rare type which Bellinger only recorded for Septimius Severus and a mature Caracalla.

A giant of Libya and the son of Poseidon and Gaia (the earth goddess), Antaeus would challenge travelers to wrestling matches, easily killing his opponents and collecting their bones to construct a temple to his father. It was en route to the Garden of Hesperides to complete his eleventh labor that Hercules met Antaeus. A wrestling match ensued, but Hercules was unable to finish his opponent as Antaeus regained his strength each time the hero threw him to the ground. Realizing Antaeus’ strength waned as the he left the earth (i.e., the protective realm of his mother), Hercules lifted the giant aloft while crushing him to death.

Rare. Ex Liles coll.; ex CNG 51 (9/1999), lot 806.

Homonoia between cities proclaimed their commonality of interests, like that of "sister-cities" in the modern world, and was based on political, economic and religious connections. The cities of Asia Minor preserved this tradition under the Roman Empire, with an extensive interlinked system of such commonalities. Among the cities participating in homonoia, Ephesus seems to have been the most popular, undoubtedly due to its status as the principal cult center of Artemis. Cyzicus, an economic powerhouse due to its location on the southern shore of the Propontis, dominated the trade routes between the Black Sea and the Aegean since the Classical period. Thus, a reciprocal alliance between the major regional trader and the cult site would benefit each other immensely.

Perge (AD 161-169) AE 34 - Lucius Verus279 viewsLucius Verus, 161-169 AD. AE34 (25.97g, 12h). Laureate bust left, slight drapery / ΠЄPΓAIΩ-N, galley sailing left over waves; large Triton ornament at prow, eight rowers on deck, steersman and two signa at stern; in exergue, from left to right: two fish, dolphin, and either a third fish or turtle. Near VF, brown surfaces, minor roughness.

An extremely rare and interesting type. The designs on the coinage of Perge are principally devoted to religious subjects, particularly to Artemis, who had an important cult center at Perge. This galley type, very reminiscent of ships on some Hadrianic sestertii, presumably alludes to the importance of Perge as a center of maritime trade. We see the type repeated on an equally rare issue of Septimius Severus (see here).
