Laodikeia (AD 62-65) AE 16 - Poppaea396 viewsPoppaea, Augusta, 62-65 AD. AE16 (4.39g, 12h). Julia Zenonis, possibly the wife of the euergetes Julius Andronicus. Struck ca 62 AD(?). Draped bust right / Aphrodite standing facing, head right, holding scepter and apple. Good VF, brown patina. Only two cited in RPC and three on CoinArchives. Possibly the sixth and finest known.

A rare and interesting instance of a prominent local woman signing her city’s coinage. In RPC, it is tentatively suggested that Julia Zenonis was the wife of the euergetes Julius Andronicus, with the husband being responsible for the larger module coins, either pseudo–autonomous or in the name of Nero, and the wife responsible for two smaller module types, one pseudo–autonomous and the other (as our coin) in the name of the empress Poppaea. This high honor of having her name appear on Laodicea’s coinage very likely stemmed from her belonging to the Zenonid family, one of the wealthiest and most powerful in Asia Minor.

Etenna (AD 193-211) AE 32 - Septimius Severus387 viewsSeptimius Severus, 193-211 AD. AE32 (19.74g, 6h). Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / Cult monument decorated with five facing busts, flanked by a statue of Hercules, holding patera, lion skin, and club to the left and a statue of a bearded male figure, holding patera and uncertain object to the right, each set on base. VF, brown patina, minor roughness. Very rare, only two known to von Aulock.

The exact nature of the unusual monument on the reverse, which serves as a recurring type on the coinage of Etenna, is uncertain. While some coins show an abstract design on the face of the monument (see, for example, von Aulock 588) others clearly show a series of facing busts (as on the current coin). We might suppose that this was a pantheistic monument honoring the principal deities of Etenna.

Apameia (AD 193-235) AE 16402 viewsTime of the Severans, 193-235 AD. AE16 (2.32g, 5h). Turreted and draped bust of Tyche right / Hekate triformis, holding torch in each hand. VF, green patina. Fine style.

Although perhaps originally conceived as cthonic goddess similar to Artemis, in Greek mythology Hekate was transformed into a nefarious deity associated with witches, ghosts, and curses. The origin of her cult can perhaps be traced to Caria, where her most prominent cult site of Lagina was located and where names stemming from Hekate (itself apparently derived from Hekatos, or “far-shooting”, an epithet of Apollo) are well–attested. From at least the Classical period she was shown in triplicate form as a goddess of the crossroads, comparable to the Roman Trivia, whose image was set up at boundaries to keep out evil spirits.

For a general introduction to the city of Tmolus and its coinage see Clive Foss, “A neighbor of Sardis: the city of Tmolus and its successors,” Classical Antiquity, vol. 1, no. 2 (Oct. 1982), pp. 178-201. While some of the city’s pseudo-autonomous issues are problematic to date, it appears that Tmolus first gained the right to coin in her name under Hadrian (Foss p. 180). Coinage with imperial portraits from his reign appears in three denominations: the current issue in the name of Sabina being the smallest denomination, the rare type of Antinous serving as a double (Blum p. 51, 1), and a type in the name of Hadrian and Aelius (Triton XV, lot 1393), which has only recently come to light, valued at one and a half times the current type. Tmolus issued coinage very sporadically and it is doubtful that a mint was established for such a small output, with nearby Sardis being a logical point of production.

A close comparison of the dies show that they are the same that were used to strike the Paris specimen. However, the spelling of Antoninus on that coin is ANTONINOC whereas here it is ANTΩNINOC. The Paris specimen appears to have been very carefully tooled.
