Kyzikos (BC 404-394) Tridrachm1017 viewsca 404-394 BC. AR Tridrachm (11.41g, 21mm, 6h). Herakliskos Drakonopnigon: the Infant Herakles crouching right, strangling a serpent coiled around each arm; Σ-Y-[N] around / Head of lion left; below, tunny left; KY-ZI around; all within shallow incuse circle. Near EF, old collection tone, slightly off center, some marks on the reverse. Extremely rare, only BM example known for this symmachy issue at Kyzikos. MPM coll., acquired in 1928.

The British Museum acquired the only known example of this type from a dealer in Rhodes in 1927 (cf. N. Hardwick in QT XXV [1996]), as part of a group of four coins that had been found together. As the present coin was acquired by the consignor’s grandfather in 1928, it is possible that it was part of the same find that contained the BM coin. A comparison of color photographs of the two coins reveals a similar surface appearance that is consistent with coins from a common hoard.

Phaselis (BC 27-AD 14) AE 17 - Augustus404 viewsAugustus (?), 27 BC-14 AD. AE17 (3.25g). Laureate bust right, A behind / ΦA-CH, Athena advancing right, brandishing spear and shield. Possibly unpublished. VF.

Phaselis was a port-city located in Lycia and the only strictly Greek city in the entire province. It was founded by the Rhodians in 690 BC during a period of expansion. This coin embodies the turn of Phaselis from a Greek city into a Roman colony. It bears the portrait of an early emperor (perhaps Augustus due to the style and presence of "A" behind the bust), but also similar reverse to earlier Grecian bronzes. The city ethnic is more complete here, reading "ΦA-CH" rather than "ΦA" on the Grecian types. This coin seems unpublished, and there are no records of a similar specimen. Provincials of Phaselis are so rare that very few publications delve into them at all.

Mytilene (BC 377-326) EL Hekte - B-653 viewsca 378-326 BC. EL Hekte (2.52g, 10mm). Female head (Leda?) right, hair rolled behind / Head of Nike right, hair bound with a taenia, [N]-I/K-A, all within linear square. VF. Carr coll. Ex Münzen and Medaillen Deutschland, Auc. 22 (2008), lot 928 (Schulte coll.); ex Karl coll.; ex Münzen and Medaillen Deutschland, Auc. 9 (2001), lot 254.

Only 3 examples known of this type. Obverse of all examples is die match with Bodenstedt 82 that he described as head of Leda. The obverse die for Bodenstedt 82 has a reverse of a swan and is only known by 2 specimens. The reverse of this coin is Nike. The inscription is not complete on any of the 3 examples known, but it is clear that the letters are N-I/K-A. Silvia Hurter, in her article on this specific example, notes that the inscription makes it clear that the reverse is Nike and it can be inferred that this coin was struck to commemorate a victory, but which is uncertain (see Die Nike von Mytilene: Eine anonyme Siegespragung, SM 202, June 2001, pp. 21-22).

Mytilene (BC 412-378) EL Hekte - B? 440 viewsca 412-378 BC. EL Hekte (2.58g, 10mm, 4h). Head of Ares right, wearing crested helmet decorated with forepart of griffin / Calf's head to right within incuse square. EF. Carr coll.

This emission is unpublished in the standard references including Bodenstedt and appears to be unique. The obverse is that of Bodenstedt emission 65 and 66 and is a die match for Bodenstedt 66 in Roma Numismatics Auc. X (9/2015), lot 459 - see Coin ID #12825. The reverse is that of Bodenstedt 56, but has no die match with any example known at the time of this sale.

This is an important coin, as it raises questions as to whether it is a completely new emission or a hybrid. If it is a combination of two existing dies used in other emissions, those dies are at least 20 years apart in the Bodenstedt order. The condition of the coins in the aforementioned example of a die link with Bodenstedt 66, suggests they are a contemporary issue.

Mytilene (BC 412-378) EL Hekte - B64/65438 viewsca 412-378 BC. EL Hekte (2.55g, 11mm, 12h). Laureate head of Apollo facing 3/4 slightly right / Head of an Amazon in Thracian leather helmet with cheek guards to right, hair in sakkos. gEF.

The reverse appears to be that of Bodenstedt 65ß. Thus this example could be a hybrid B64/65. On the other hand, this could be an example of a die break which links the reverses of B64 and B65. See Coin ID #11245 for similar emission.

Augustus' sun sign was Libra. We don't know why he selected the Capricorn as his emblem. Perhaps Capricorn was either his rising sign or his Moon sign. Popular astrology (of the newspaper kind) is sun sign astrology. The ancients tended to attach more importance to the Moon sign and rising signs. Perhaps Augustus selected the Capricorn because it is associated with stern moral authority.
