Rosen tentatively places his tetrobol in Caria, but notes the reverse type does not conform to other archaic Carian issues. This and the denomination suggests an attribution to Ionia is more likely. There are numerous varieties of these archaic lion head silver pieces, and a precise attribution for each type remains out of reach.

Stratonikeia (BC 30-0) Drachm - Autonomous426 viewslate 1st cent BC. AR Drachm (18mm, 3.69g, 12h). Zopuros, magistrate. Laureate and draped bust of Hekate right, crescent on forehead; ZΩΠΥΡΟΣ to left, uncertain symbol to right / ΣΤΡΑ, Zeus on horseback right, holding sceptre and reins. Good VF, attractive dark iridescent toning. Extremely rare, one of two known (the other in the Vatican collection cited by Imhoof-Blumer).

The traditional view of this denomination as a drachm has been challenged by Meadows, who believes that during this period at Stratonikeia their drachm was roughly equal to the Roman quinarius (1.8g). As such, he labels this type as a didrachm, but we have retained traditional attribution for clarity.

Kyzikos (BC 460-400) EL Stater1650 viewsca 460-400 BC. EL Stater (15.97g, 12h). Warrior, nude but for crested Corinthian helmet, kneeling right, checking the straightness of his arrow, bow hung over his left wrist; tunny downward behind / Quadripartite incuse punch. VF.

This type is part of a sub-series of Kyzikene staters that depict a warrior, in this case an archer, in the various stages of preparing his equipment for battle (Von Fritze I 115-117). It is not known whether this sub-series depicts any particular hero from mythology.

Kyzikos (BC 334) EL Stater3776 viewsca 334 BC. EL Stater (16.02g, 12h). Eleutheria seated left on rock, holding wreath in right hand; tunny below, ΕΛΕΥ-ΘΕΡΙ in two lines on rock / Quadripartite incuse square. Good VF, toned. Extremely rare. Fielder Coll.

This specimen bears an inscription, 'Eleutheria" (Freedom), that makes clear the intent of the type: to celebrate a liberation. Several different victories have been suggested, but the presence of a coin of this type in the Prinkipo Hoard, buried circa 334 BC, in conjunction with gold staters of Philip II, clearly suggests that the victory in question is Alexander's first defeat of the Persians at the river Granikos in 334 BC. The Granikos was located just to the south and west of Kyzikos, and Alexander's victory liberated Kyzikos from Persian control. Thus, not only is this a very rare stater from Kyzikos, it also represents the first coin struck as a direct result of Alexander's campaign to conquer the world, predating even Alexander's own coinage.
