Kyzikos (BC 550-500) EL Hekte597 viewsca 550-500 BC. EL Hekte (2.69g, 10.5mm). Head of Perseus to left, wearing winged helmet with hair hanging beneath and represented by dots; behind, tunny swimming downwards / Quadripartite incuse square. VF. A rare type with about 20 known. Carr coll.

William Greenwell, in his 1887 tome entitled: The electrum coinage of Cyzicus, notes that the helmet is the helmet of Hades lent to him by the nymphs. The reference by Greenwell is to the ‘mission’ of Perseus to cut-off the head of Medusa. The next coin in the Greenwell listing notes a type where much of the detail of this slaying is depicted – see Coin ID #14069.

Obverse is from a previously unpublished die with sphinx not standing on tunny, but separated above. The cataloguer notes: “The so called 'lock of immortality', rendered as a spiral tendril or plume on the head of the sphinx, is a device with Egyptian roots that appears on similar images across the Near East.”

Known type for a stater (at least 10 sold at auction, see Coin ID #9333 and #6817), hekte (1/6th Stater) (at least 12 sold at auction, see Coin ID #9330 and #9332), hemihekte (1/12th Stater) (at least 9 sold at auction, see Coin ID #9329) and Myshemihekte (1/24th Stater) (at least 6 sold at auction, see Coin ID #11022). In some instances, it appears that the die for the stater was used on hekte and, as such, the tuna is off the flan. This example is from an unknown die. In some cases, Attis is wearing a conspicuously jeweled Phyrgian cap (see Coin ID #9332) and in others, the jewels are less conspicuous or absent.

The published examples of this type, as well as prior examples offered at public auction, are all 1/12 Staters (Hemihekte). This appears to be the first example at the 1/6 Stater (Hekte) denomination.

Kyzikos (BC 500-450) EL 1/24 Stater 294 viewsca 500-450 BC. EL 1/24 Stater (0.67g, 7mm). Lion right, gnawing on leg of prey; below, tunny right / Quadripartite incuse square. gVF.
This is the second of two known that have been offered at auction.

This obverse has very close links to other coinage of a similar period. Early drachmae of Velia have a similar type. Colin M. Kraay [Archaic and Classical Greek Coins (1976), p. 263] comments on the connection of the drachmae and this Kyzikos example, noting the rarity of deliberate reproductions of specific coin types across cities. An almost identical type is also to be found on a hecte emission of Mytilene (Bodenstedt 78 – see, on this website, Coin ID #11257; see also Coin ID #12346).

This coin is an example of hekte of a type known as a stater – see Coin ID #14563. In addition, examples are known for fractions of 1/12 and 1/24 stater with the hektes being the more abundant example of which at least 20 are known. Head in his 1887 tome, “Historia Nummorum” (figure 271) was an early reference to this type.

William Greenwell, in his 1887 tome entitled "The electrum coinage of Cyzicus," notes: “Mr. Head in his paper on the coins of the find of 1875 (Num. Chron., N.S., xvi, p. 282), suggests that this figure may be one of the Argonauts, and the attribution is not improbable, the mythical history of Cyzicus being closely connected with their expedition.” Coin ID #13239 and #13744 of Kyzicus also reflect a connection with the Argonauts.

Perseus kneeling right, head reverted, wearing a winged hood, cloak over shoulders fastened with circular brooch on breast, head of Medusa in left hand, sickle (harpa) in right; below, tunny fish right / Quadripartite incuse square. Unusually well centered, gVF. Carr coll.

The ‘Perseus’ emissions are known for denominations of stater through 1/96th. Most examples do not capture the whole ‘scene’ - commonly either the head of Perseus or Medusa being off the flan. This coin is possibly the second best published example capturing the major features [For an example that is even sharper in its detail, see Gemini IX (1/2012) lot 105].

William Greenwell, in his 1887 tome entitled "The electrum coinage of Cyzicus," notes only a stater of this type and offers the following speculation: "The expedition of the Argonauts plays an important part in the mythical history of Cyzicus, and the prow represented on the stater is probably that of the ship Argo" (pp. 124-125). Kyzikos (BC 500-450) EL 1/6 Stater524 viewsca 550-500 BC. EL Hekte (2.66g, 12mm). Winged male mythological creature (Phobos or Daimon) with human body, lion head, griffin’s ears and wings, running/kneeling left, head turned right, holding tunny by tail in left hand / Quadripartite incuse square. NGC graded Choice XF, strike 5/5, surface 4/5, nicely centered, struck from artistic dies. An excellent example of archaic representation of local deity from Asia Minor. Carr coll.

A remarkable mythological type usually known from the stater with the same design. At times identified as Phobos, the personification of terror, the figure may also be the Mithraic divinity Areimanios (Ahriman) as argued by Bivar, "Mithra and Mesopotamia," Mithraic Studies (Manchester, 1975), pp. 275-89.

This issue is not only unusual for the placement of the tunny on the left of the facing head, but also for the shape of the ear on the feline. Typically, the ear is depicted, on all denominations of von Fritze 43, with pointed ears, where here they are rounded. Although this is likely the result of the liberty of the engraver, one wonders whether this might be an attempt to depict a totally different animal, such as a bear.

This is the second of three known that have been offered at auction.

This obverse has very close links to other coinage of similar period. Early drachmae of Velia have a similar type. Colin M. Kraay [Archaic and Classical Greek Coins (1976), p. 263] comments on the connection of the drachmae and this Kyzikos example, noting the rarity of deliberate reproductions of specific coin types across cities. An almost identical type is also found on a hecte emission of Mytilene (Bodenstedt 78 – Coin ID #11257).

Ex Sotheby’s sale 3/1996, 109; Star Coll. This stater speaks to the relations between Cyzicus and its great trading partner, Panticapaeum, where numerous Cyzicene staters have been found, testifying to their broad circulation in Crimea. This arresting Pan-Silenus head seems to have been borrowed from the obverse of the gold staters of Panticapaeum, which were issued in great quantity from ca 350-320 BC; if the stater predates that period, the motif may be inspired by other art from Panticapaeum. There is ample evidence of the relation of these two cities as supplier and consumer of gold. It has been suggested that the main supply of gold for Cyzicene staters was the rich mines of the Ural mountains.

The tuna was the sole type on the earliest electrum coinage of Cyzicus, but the relationship between type variety and denomination was inconsistent. In some series a whole tuna indicated a stater and just part of the fish indicated a smaller denomination, but our coin is a stater and shows just the head and the tail of a tuna. In any case all staters of this early period are very rare, and this type seems to be unpublished.

While the staters of this issue are relatively common, the sixth staters are particularly rare. Weber notes that at the time of its publication, the only other example known was in the Bibliothèque Nationale. This may have been in error as a sixth stater is not present in SNG France.
