(BC 390-370) Mithrapata - Stater368 viewsMithrapata, Dynast, ca 390-370 BC. AR Stater (22.5mm, 9.66g). Forepart of lion right / Head of Mithrapata left; MITHRAPATA in Lycian around; all within incuse square. Near EF, double struck on obverse. Apparently unique.

The obverse of Mithrapata’s staters feature either a lion forepart in profile or a facing lion scalp. Previously, all the known coins with the lion forepart obverse were paired with the profile of Mithrapata reverse. Triskeles reverses were only known with obverses with the facing lion scalp. The present coin is the first to feature the profile lion obverse with a triskeles reverse.

(BC 400-370) Artumpara - Stater419 viewsArttumpara, Dynast, ca 390-370 BC. AR Stater (21mm, 8.40g, 4h). Xanthos mint(?). Forepart of lion right / Helmeted head of Athena right; diskeles above; all in dotted circle within incuse circle. Good VF, toned, struck with worn obverse die. Very rare.

Although this issue is anepigraphic, the present and Roma coins are struck from the same obverse die as SNG Copenhagen Supp. 457 = SNG von Aulock 4183, which has a reverse that bears Arttumpara’s name. It should be noted - this obverse die appears to have had details reengraved before striking the present piece.

(BC 370) Perikle - 1/6 Stater742 viewsPerikles, ca 380-360 BC. AR Sixth Stater (10mm, 1.18g, 9h). Wedrei mint. Lion right, biting into the hindquarter of a bull crouching left / Head of Athena facing slightly left, wearing crested Corinthian helmet adorned with sphinx on each side; triskeles to left. EF, toned, minor die break on reverse.

Many late Lycian dynastic coins bear legends on both sides that had long been assumed to be the names of two dynasts, who ostensibly issued joint coinages. However, more recent evidence has proved that names such as Wedrei, Zagaba, and Zemuri are actually names of cities, which are probably the mints of the respective issues they appear on (cf. A.G. Keen, Dynastic Lycia: A Political History of the Lycians & Their Relations with Foreign Powers, c. 545-362 BC [Leiden: Brill, 1998], pp. 109 and 154–5).

(BC 490-460) Uncertain Dynast - Stater342 viewsUncertain dynast, ca 490/80-470/60 BC. AR Stater (20mm, 9.58g). Forepart of boar right / Triskeles in linear square within incuse square. VF, toned, die break and old scuffs under tone on obverse.

This coin defies placement within the early groups defined by Vismara (Falghera), as the obverse style is a match for the Predynastic and Protodynastic A groups, while the reverse (anepigraphic triskeles) is canonical for Protodynastic B. Nevertheless, production of all of these groups overlap in the period 490/80-470/60 BC, to which this coin must belong.

PGB coll., acquired in early 1970s.

Artumpara was a late satrap or dynast of Lycia who was involved in putting down the revolt of Datames; he himself seems to have been defeated by Perikle, who at one point ruled over most of Lycia.

(BC 520-480) Uncertain Dynast - 1/2 Stater?895 viewsca 521-478 BC. AR Drachm (4.12g, 14mm). Forepart of winged bull right / Quadripartite incuse square divided diagonally. Good VF, lightly toned. Extremely rare. Ex Leu 65 (5/1996), lot 202.

Leu sale attributed this issue to an uncertain mint in Ionia, noting the similarity of the style to the archaic issues of Klazomenai that feature a winged boar forepart. It is also similar in style to various winged boar foreparts on contemporary issues at Mytilene. While agreeing with these comparisons, the weight of this example and its diagonally divided incuse are more consistent with issues of Lesbos than Ionia. The bull is also a common type used at Mytilene, but relatively rare among issues in Ionia. Finally, in addition to using winged boars, Mytilene used winged lions, so the appearance of a winged bull would not be surprising (especially as all motifs are common in eastern/Persian art). So, while the attribution to Mytilene is conjectural, the preponderance of the evidence weighs greater in its favor than than to a mint in Ionia.

(BC 470-440) Uncertain Dynast - 1/8 Stater?868 viewsca 480-450 BC. AR 1/8 Stater? (1.17g). Boar's head left / Protome of a man-headed bull facing left within incuse square. EF.

The reverse image is reminiscent of the coins of the Lycian dynast Uvug. The weight standard is hard to define, since the weights are somewhat erratic (along with the von Aulock coin, cf. Peus 372, 2002, lot 361). It might be a 1/6th stater on the light stater (c. 8.0-8.6 g), but actually this standard is known from 460 BC onwards only; cf. O. Morkholm and G. Neumann, Die lykischen Munzlegenden (Gottingen 1978), p. 5 f.
