Nikaia (AD 193-217) AE 32 - Julia Domna386 viewsJulia Domna, Augusta, 193-217 AD. AE32 (23.36g). Struck 208/209 AD. Near VF, dark brown patina.

In 208/209 AD, the city of Nicaea celebrated the Philadelphian games to honor the fraternity of Caracalla and Geta. Numerous agonistic types are known, usually with the legend CEOVHPEIA ΦIΛAΔEΛΦEIA. This coin shares it's obverse die with a games coin which features on the reverse the busts of both Caracalla and Geta (RG 397). According to Head (Historia Numorum), the title Agonothesia refers to "The office of an Agonothetes" and is known on coins from Thessalonica and Gordus Julia. Jones (A Dictionary of Ancient Greek Coins) defines Agonothesia as "The holding of a contest, the chief organizer being known as the agonothetes. The reverse type is similar to the coin of Septimius in RG, pl. lxxvi 15 except that coin has the normal games legend for Nicaea at this time, CEOVHPEIA ΦIΛAΔEΛΦEIA and the athlete doesn't appear to be holding the palm branch.

laureate head right / NI-K-A-I separated by three standards, outer standards topped with capricorn; EΩN in exergue. VF, medium brown patina, well-centered with a solid strike. Hoeft coll.

The capricorn standards likely represent Legio XIIII Gemina Martia Victrix, the legion which had initially supported Septimius Severus in his bid for the purple. While rather distantly related to Septimius Severus through Julia Domna, though named after him, Alexander seems to have encouraged a rumor that he was in fact the illegitimate son of Caracalla and therefore the grandson of Septimius. This coin then suggests an interesting and subtle use of propaganda.

Nikaia (AD 198-217) AE 26 - Caracalla470 viewsCaracalla, 198-217 AD. AE26 (12.35g), struck as Augustus 211-217 AD. ANTΩNEINOC - AVΓOVCTOC, draped, cuirassed and laureate bust right, seen from behind / NIKAIEΩ-N, Galley over waves left, 4 oarsmen sitting ahead, helmsman standing behind, standard at front, banner at stern; emperor sitting left, holding spear in left hand and patera in outstretched right hand, in front of him standing Tyche of Nikaia and presentinhg the young Dionysos to him, who raises his hands to him. Extremely rare. F, dark green patina. Hoeft coll.

The rev. belongs to a series of coins from Nikaia which shows the emperor in a galley where he is welcomed by the local deities of Nikaia (cf. Rec.Gen. 469f). A similar motive is found on a coin for Gordian III, where the City Tyche is presenting the young Dionysos to the sitting Roma (Rec.Gen. Pl. 84, 27).

The metropolis of Bithynia was in fact Nicomedia, but Nicaea raises a claim upon that title as shown by a coin issued under Domitian with the legend "the Nikaians, the first of the eparchias." From this claim emerged a legal dispute which was finally decided by Valens - Nicaea and Nicomedia both were allowed to call themselves the first city of Bithynia, but only Nicomedia was the metropolis. But this vain title was useless: by the new arrangement of the provinces, Chalcedon became the metropolis of the anterior Pontus. It's known from a discourse from Dion of Prusa (who lived in the time of Domitian) in which he challenged the Nicomedians to hold peace with the Nicaeans.

Hipparchus the Astronomer is honored on a few rare issues from Nicaea, where he was born circa 190 BC.
