Magnesia (BC 458-420) Tetrobol309 viewsca 465-400 BC. AR Tetrobol (15mm, 2.14g, 3h). Male figure standing front, head to left, leading with his right arm horse standing facing left, head to right / Eagle flying right; around, uncertain letters (?). Of the highest rarity, the better of two known. Slightly porous, otherwise VF.

CNG attributes this issue to 'Themistokles (?)', stating that it fits well into the coinage of Themistokles and Archepolis as described by Nollé and Wenniger. However, the letters on our example do not resemble the monograms of Themistokles or Archepolis, and the lack of a dotted square border and the style of the eagle point, in this cataloguer's opinion, to a somewhat later date.

Magnesia (BC 458-420) Trihemiobol185 viewsThemistokles(?), ca 465-459 BC. AR Obol (0.88g). Male figure standing left extending right arm to a horse standing facing, head left / Eagle flying right. Unpublished. VF, toned, struck from worn dies, minor porosity. Possibly unique.

This coin appeared in the market alongside known issues of Themistokles and his son, Archepolis, but does not appear in Nollé & Wenninger’s corpus of their coinage, nor has another appeared in the recent sales of their coinage. While the obverse type is novel, a similar reverse type of an eagle flying appears on issues of both rulers. Additionally, the general style and fabric of the flan is consistent with Themistokleian issues.

“The first city one comes to after Ephesos is Magnesia, which is an Aiolian city . . . In the present city is the temple of Artemis Leukophryene, which in the size of its shrine and in the number of its votive offerings is inferior to the temple at Ephesos, but in the harmony and skill shown in the structure of the sacred enclosure is far superior to it. And in size it surpasses all the sacred enclosures in Asia except two, that at Ephesos (to Artemis) and that at Didymoi (to Apollo)” (Strabo, Geography 14. 1. 40).

Magnesia (BC 155-145) Octobol991 viewsca 155-145 BC. AR Octobol (5.50g, 1h), Dionysios son of Demetrios. Armored cavalryman, wearing helmet, holding couched lance in his right hand and with his cloak flowing back from his shoulders, riding horse prancing to right; Δ below / ΜΑΓΝΗΤΩΝ ΔΙΟΝΥΣΙΟΣ ΔΗΜΗΤΡΙΟΥ, bull butting left, within circular maeander pattern. Very rare. Virtually as struck. Ex Gemini I (1/2005), 162 and Lanz 102 (5/2001), 267, and from the collections of The Johns Hopkins University and J. W. Garrett, Bank Leu and Numismatic Fine Arts (10/1984), 266, C. S. Bement, Naville VII (6/1924), 1458 and T. Prowe, Egger 46 (5/1914), 949, and ex Hirsch 16 (12/1906), 636.

The letter delta on the obverse is the denomination mark and stands for four diobols or an octobol (smaller pieces valued at two and four obols are also known). These coins were primarily for local use at the time when the city produced its extensive issues of stephanophoric tetradrachms.

Magnesia (BC 400-350) Drachm484 viewsca 350-300 BC. AR Drachm (3.30g, 15mm, 6h). Laureate head of Apollo right / Forepart of bull butting right; kerykeion above. VF, flat strike in centers, porous. Unpublished.

The style and fabric of the coin are consistent with the coinage of Ionia in the mid-late 4th century BC. The Apollo / bull butting types are common at Magnesia, but the absence of any maeander pattern casts doubt upon an attribution to that city. There are rare gold issues with these types at Samos (cf. Barron pl. XXX, 14-5), but it is unlikely that this is a previously unknown silver issue from that mint.

Magnesia (BC 210-200) Didrachm804 viewsca 210-200 BC. AR Didrachm (11.08g, 10h). Persic standard. Theodoros, son of Theogenes, magistrate. Good VF, a hint of porosity. Unpublished with monogram and this magistrate.

The weight and type of this piece clearly place it among the Persic standard didrachms detailed by Kinns, all of which are very rare. What is also significant about this piece is the addition of a monogram on the obverse, and the magistrate, who is unattested for all of the denominations during this period.
