Kyzikos (BC 334) EL Stater5145 viewsca 334 BC. EL Stater (16.02g, 12h). Eleutheria seated left on rock, holding wreath in right hand; tunny below, ΕΛΕΥ-ΘΕΡΙ in two lines on rock / Quadripartite incuse square. Good VF, toned. Extremely rare. Fielder Coll.

This specimen bears an inscription, 'Eleutheria" (Freedom), that makes clear the intent of the type: to celebrate a liberation. Several different victories have been suggested, but the presence of a coin of this type in the Prinkipo Hoard, buried circa 334 BC, in conjunction with gold staters of Philip II, clearly suggests that the victory in question is Alexander's first defeat of the Persians at the river Granikos in 334 BC. The Granikos was located just to the south and west of Kyzikos, and Alexander's victory liberated Kyzikos from Persian control. Thus, not only is this a very rare stater from Kyzikos, it also represents the first coin struck as a direct result of Alexander's campaign to conquer the world, predating even Alexander's own coinage.

Kyzikos (BC 400-330) EL Stater3168 viewsca 380 BC. EL Stater (16.03g). Bearded and horned head of Silenus (or Pan) left, wearing ivy wreath; tunny below / Quadripartite incuse square with granular surfaces. Rare. A stunning portrait of late Classical style and a lovely reddish tone. Insignificant flan crack, otherwise EF.

Ex Sotheby’s sale 3/1996, 109; Star Coll. This stater speaks to the relations between Cyzicus and its great trading partner, Panticapaeum, where numerous Cyzicene staters have been found, testifying to their broad circulation in Crimea. This arresting Pan-Silenus head seems to have been borrowed from the obverse of the gold staters of Panticapaeum, which were issued in great quantity from ca 350-320 BC; if the stater predates that period, the motif may be inspired by other art from Panticapaeum. There is ample evidence of the relation of these two cities as supplier and consumer of gold. It has been suggested that the main supply of gold for Cyzicene staters was the rich mines of the Ural mountains.

While the staters of this issue are relatively common, the sixth staters are particularly rare. Weber notes that at the time of its publication, the only other example known was in the Bibliothèque Nationale. This may have been in error as a sixth stater is not present in SNG France.

The ‘Perseus’ emissions are known for denominations of stater through 1/96th. Most examples do not capture the whole ‘scene’ - commonly either the head of Perseus or Medusa being off the flan. This coin is possibly the second best published example capturing the major features [For an example that is even sharper in its detail, see Gemini IX (1/2012) lot 105].

In some instances, it appears that the die for the stater was used on hekte and, as such, the tuna is off the flan. This example is from an unknown die. In some cases, Attis is wearing a conspicuously jeweled Phyrgian cap (see Coin ID #9332) and in others, the jewels are less conspicuous or absent.

This is the second of three known that have been offered at auction.

This obverse has very close links to other coinage of similar period. Early drachmae of Velia have a similar type. Colin M. Kraay [Archaic and Classical Greek Coins (1976), p. 263] comments on the connection of the drachmae and this Kyzikos example, noting the rarity of deliberate reproductions of specific coin types across cities. An almost identical type is also found on a hecte emission of Mytilene (Bodenstedt 78 – Coin ID #11257).

William Greenwell, in his 1887 tome entitled "The electrum coinage of Cyzicus," notes only a stater of this type and offers the following speculation: "The expedition of the Argonauts plays an important part in the mythical history of Cyzicus, and the prow represented on the stater is probably that of the ship Argo" (pp. 124-125). William Greenwell, in his 1887 tome entitled "The electrum coinage of Cyzicus," notes: “Mr. Head in his paper on the coins of the find of 1875 (Num. Chron., N.S., xvi, p. 282), suggests that this figure may be one of the Argonauts, and the attribution is not improbable, the mythical history of Cyzicus being closely connected with their expedition.” Coin ID #13239 and #13744 of Kyzicus also reflect a connection with the Argonauts.
