RPC only records two specimens for this issue. As the portrait on the obverse is not identified, the authors of RPC leave open the possibility that this could represent a later emperor, perhaps Domitian or Trajan. This cataloguer thinks the portrait looks more like a young Nero than either of the other two.
Attaleia (AD 81-96) AE 20 - Domitian164 viewsDomitian, 81-96 AD. AE20 (4.64g 6h). No legend, laureate head right / ATTAΛЄWN, helmeted and draped bust of Athena right. Near VF, dark green patina. Tricarico Coll.
Attaleia (AD 96-98) AE 19 - Nerva380 viewsNerva, 96-98 AD. AE19 (6.26g). Laureate head right / Helmeted and draped bust of Athena right, wearing aegis. VF, dark green patina. Wagner Coll. The Roman coinage of Attaleia is difficult to assign to specific reigns because the coins do not carry identifying inscriptions until the reign of Trajan. Baydur assigns this coin to Trajan based on an “unreadable legend” on the known example. This better quality specimen shows there is in fact no obverse legend. This coin probably should be assigned to the reign of Nerva.
