Babelon (Traité des monnaies Grecques et Romaines) describes the reverse as a wolf with a crescent before it, which would be easy to misinterpret from the poorly preserved specimen he plated. On the current and following lot, however, it is clear the animals are leashed. This and the following two lots no doubt refer to the royal hunt, with the prey on the obverse and the hunting companion – a hound – on the reverse.

An interesting coin. The lion appears Carian in style, and the confronted bull’s heads oddly resemble the facing “horned” lion heads of some types typically given to Hekatomnos (compare SNG Keckman 843).

Karia Uncertain (BC 470-420) Drachm895 viewsca 430 BC. AR Drachm (3.78g, 3h). Gorgoneion with out-stretched tongue, surround by four wings arranged in clockwise direction / Harpy with four wings and stretched claws flying right, 3 pellets to left, all in deep incuse square. Very rare. Light toning, VF.

One of the very rare representations of a Harpy on an ancient coin. The dating and assignment to a Carian mint are not completely secure - one finds the Harpy motif on other Carian Incerta from the second half of the 5th century BC (see Troxell, Winged Carians, p. 262, 37-40), but a mint in Lycia could also be conceivable.

Karia Uncertain (BC 480-420) 1/4 Stater (?)318 viewsca 5th century BC. AR 1/4 Stater(?) (2.93g, 13mm, 12h). Lion standing left, head turned right, raising left forepaw / Forepart of bull (or boar?) right in dotted square within incuse square. Unpublished. Near EF, toned, patches of find patina. Apparently unique.

The obverse type is similar to the reverses of a Carian series featuring a winged male deity on the obverse (cf. SNG Kayhan 977–8 and Rosen 624), as well as an archaic Carian stater issue featuring a lion’s head turned back (cf. Dewing 2350–2). The type combination here also is commonly used on various issues in Caria; all attributed to uncertain mints.

Karia Uncertain (BC 500-450) Diobol472 viewsca 500-440 BC. AR Diobol - Milesian Standard (1.93g, 10mm). Bull standing right, head reverted / Quadripartite incuse square. gVF.

Karia Uncertain (BC 500-480) Stater596 viewsca 500-480 BC. AR Stater (10.82g). Lion's head left with foreleg below / Dipartite incuse square, parted diagonally. Struck from rusty dies. VF.

Attributed to Issos in Kilikia in earlier times, the obverse type is clearly reminiscent of Karian coins (cf. SNG Kayhan 929-30). In fact, B. Head had pondered Knidos as the place of minting (Historia Numorum, 1st ed. 1886), p. 523 note). This is certainly wrong - both the standard and the fabric are different - but Karia is still likely to be the area of this issue.

VF, toned, granular surfaces, light scuff on reverse. Extremely rare issue with both dolphins right, only the von Aulock and CNG 96 specimens published.

Karia Uncertain (BC 500-490) Stater608 viewsca 500-490 BC. AR Stater (19mm, 14.54g). Two dolphins right within linear square border / Two rectangular incuses. VF, toned, light porosity. Extremely rare issue with both dolphins right, only the von Aulock specimen published.

This coinage had originally been attributed to Poseidion on Karpathos, but Cahn’s analysis of the issues bearing an inscription, πos, has conclusively shown that this legend is not an ethnic and cannot point to a mint in Poseidion. It is most likely struck from a mint on the coast of Caria or one of the other mints that used this form of double rectangular incuse: Ialysos, Kamiros, or Lindos.

This is a difficult coin to identify with certainty, but the lion resembles some of those found on early silver fractions attributed to Caria.
