Bare head right / Hades dragging away protesting Persephone in quadriga right; overturned basket of flowers below. VF, small area of flat strike in obverse legend. Overstruck on a cistophorus of Augustus. Extremely rare. This unique example depicts a winged figure holding the wedding torch, or taeda, above the horses. This is Hymenaeus, one of the erotes and the personification of the Hymenaea, or wedding song sung outside the bridal chamber. Metcalf's attribution to this mint is based on the regional association of this reverse type.

According to Homer, the abduction of Persephone took place somewhere in the "Nysion pedion." It mattered little that Lydian Nysa was a forth century foundation; a cult of the underworld grew up there. The town had a Plutonium, and in later times a festival called the Theogamia celebrated the abduction itself." (W. E. Metcalf, a. O., p. 50).
