Magnesia (BC 350-325) Drachm643 viewsca 350-325 BC. AR Drachm (3.10g, 10h) Horseman riding right, wearing helmet, chlamys and cuirass, and holding a spear in his right hand / Bull butting to right; ear of barley to right. Extremely rare. Beautifully toned. Extremely fine.

From the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, II, Sotheby & Co. Zurich, 4 April 1973, 568, J. Ward and the Earl of Ashburnham, SWH 6 May 1896, 183. While Magnesia struck a wide variety of denominations in its horseman/bull series, Rhodian weight drachms seem to be inordinately rare: only ten are known, all of different magistrates.

Magnesia (BC 400-350) Drachm484 viewsca 350-300 BC. AR Drachm (3.30g, 15mm, 6h). Laureate head of Apollo right / Forepart of bull butting right; kerykeion above. VF, flat strike in centers, porous. Unpublished.

The style and fabric of the coin are consistent with the coinage of Ionia in the mid-late 4th century BC. The Apollo / bull butting types are common at Magnesia, but the absence of any maeander pattern casts doubt upon an attribution to that city. There are rare gold issues with these types at Samos (cf. Barron pl. XXX, 14-5), but it is unlikely that this is a previously unknown silver issue from that mint.

1236667.jpg
Magnesia (BC 458-420) Tetrobol310 viewsca 465-400 BC. AR Tetrobol (15mm, 2.14g, 3h). Male figure standing front, head to left, leading with his right arm horse standing facing left, head to right / Eagle flying right; around, uncertain letters (?). Of the highest rarity, the better of two known. Slightly porous, otherwise VF.

CNG attributes this issue to 'Themistokles (?)', stating that it fits well into the coinage of Themistokles and Archepolis as described by Nollé and Wenniger. However, the letters on our example do not resemble the monograms of Themistokles or Archepolis, and the lack of a dotted square border and the style of the eagle point, in this cataloguer's opinion, to a somewhat later date.
7207335B15D.jpg
Magnesia (BC 458-420) Trihemiobol186 viewsThemistokles(?), ca 465-459 BC. AR Obol (0.88g). Male figure standing left extending right arm to a horse standing facing, head left / Eagle flying right. Unpublished. VF, toned, struck from worn dies, minor porosity. Possibly unique.

This coin appeared in the market alongside known issues of Themistokles and his son, Archepolis, but does not appear in Nollé & Wenninger’s corpus of their coinage, nor has another appeared in the recent sales of their coinage. While the obverse type is novel, a similar reverse type of an eagle flying appears on issues of both rulers. Additionally, the general style and fabric of the flan is consistent with Themistokleian issues.
