Tarsos (AD 198-217) Didrachm - Caracalla

Caracalla, 211-217 AD. AR Didrachm (7.03g), struck 215 AD. AV K M AVP CE-OVHP ANTΩNINOC CE, head laureate right / TVXH TAPCOV MHT, city goddess, veiled and wearing crown of towers,seated left on rocks, leaning back on left hand and holding flower (?) downwards in right hand; at her feet, river god Kydnos swimming left, AM-K in field. Rare.

Late in Caracalla's reign, probably on the occasion of the emperor's actual visit to the city in 215 AD, Tarsus exceptionally produced a small issue of silver coins like this one, and also assumed the titles "First, largest, most beautiful", indicated by the letters AMK on the reverse of our didrachm.
