Magnesia (BC 458-420) Tetrobol

ca 465-400 BC. AR Tetrobol (15mm, 2.14g, 3h). Male figure standing front, head to left, leading with his right arm horse standing facing left, head to right / Eagle flying right; around, uncertain letters (?). Of the highest rarity, the better of two known. Slightly porous, otherwise VF.

CNG attributes this issue to 'Themistokles (?)', stating that it fits well into the coinage of Themistokles and Archepolis as described by Nollé and Wenniger. However, the letters on our example do not resemble the monograms of Themistokles or Archepolis, and the lack of a dotted square border and the style of the eagle point, in this cataloguer's opinion, to a somewhat later date.
