Prusa ad Olympum (AD 193) AE 23 - Didius Julianus

Didius Julianus, 193 AD. AE23 (4.28g). AVT K M Î”IÎ”IOC-[IOVÎ›I]ANOC AVG, laureate, cuirassed bust right / Î P-OV / CAEÎ©N, six-columned temple, mint name in Greek across field and in exergue. Extremely rare. Awkwardly shaped flan. aEF.

Prusa was apparently the only provincial mint to strike coins for Julianus and his family, and the Recueil General knew only one specimen for Julianus himself, that in the BM. The elevation of Julianus in Rome caused the revolt of Pescennius Niger in Syria, but obviously there would have been a period of two or three weeks in Bithynia in mid-late April 193, between the announcement of Julianus' elevation and the arrival of news of Niger's revolt. This coin was struck within this very brief time frame.
