Ancient Greek and Roman coins from Asia Minor

Coin ID #14953

Magnesia (BC 458-420) Trihemiobol

Themistokles(?), ca 465-459 BC. AR Obol (0.88g). Male figure standing left extending right arm to a horse standing facing, head left / Eagle flying right. Unpublished. VF, toned, struck from worn dies, minor porosity. Possibly unique.

This coin appeared in the market alongside known issues of Themistokles and his son, Archepolis, but does not appear in Nollé & Wenninger’s corpus of their coinage, nor has another appeared in the recent sales of their coinage. While the obverse type is novel, a similar reverse type of an eagle flying appears on issues of both rulers. Additionally, the general style and fabric of the flan is consistent with Themistokleian issues.
