Coin ID #9212

Assos (BC 420-380) Obol

5th century BC. AR Hemiobol (0.42g). Veiled (?) female head left/ ΑΣΣ-ΟΟΝ, griffin right within square linear border within incuse square. VF. Very rare.

The legend allows the assignment of related types. A little later, the same iconography has been assigned to uncertain Lycian dynasts (Traité 245, BMC Lycia 100, Gorny & Mosch 200 (2011), 1926). Presumably, the bronze coins with female/griffin, which were previously set thought from Phocaea (SNG Cop Ionia 1031f.), are minted in Assos.
