Ancient Greek and Roman coins from Asia Minor

Coin ID #4980

Hierokaisareia (AD 116-117) AE 22

Imperial Times, ca 116-117 AD. AE22 (9.94g). Ti. Julius Ferox, Proconsul Of Asia. ΙΕΡΟΚΑΙCΑΡΕΙΑ. Head of Tyche right, wearing turreted crown / ΑΝΘΥΠΑΤΩ ΦΕΡΟΚΙ, Tyche standing left, holding patera and cornucopiae. Very Fine and Very Rare.

Ti. Julius Ferox served as prconsul of Asia in the last year of Trajan's reign. In that post he would have had to deal with Trajan's Persian invasion, revolts in Judaea and the aftermath of the great Antioch earthquake of 115. Earlier he held the suffect consulship in 100, and from 101-104 served as curator alvei Tiberis et reparum et cloac. urbis, the official responsible for the banks and channels of the Tiber. The post was instituted by Augustus because of the frequent inundations of that river.
