Ancient Greek and Roman coins from Asia Minor

Coin ID #12569

Epiphaneia (AD 222-235) AE 34 - Severus Alexander

Severus Alexander, 222-235 AD. AE34 (26.09g, 7h). Dated CY 298 (230/1 AD). Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / Athena standing left, holding spear and shield. VF, dark green patina. Possibly unpublished.

See CNG Electronic Auction 130, lot 284 for the same obverse die. To judge from the major collections, coins of Alexander from Epiphanea are extremely rare, while coins of the emperor’s mother, Julia Mamaea, appear to be much more common.
