Bithynia Uncertain (AD 69-79) AE 26 - Titus

Koinon of Bithynia. Titus, as Caesar, 69-79 AD. AE26 (10.19g). Under proconsul M. Salvidenus Asprenas. AYTOKPA TITOΣ KAIΣAP ΣEBAΣ YIOΣ, head laureate right, before oblong countermark with letters MHTB ligate / EΠI M [Σ]AΛ[OY]IΔIANOY AΣΠP[H]NA ANΘY, palm tree with seven branches; to left cuirass, helmet, and two spears; to right large round shield and two spears. VF. Ex Sneh Coll.; ex D. Markov, possibly ex Emporium 10, 1987, lot 56, which bears the same countermark according to RPC.

A rare Judaea Capta type on a provincial coin struck by a remote mint that was not directly affected by the war. The countermark, according to RPC, "may stand for μητροπολιc Βιθυνιαc, implying an attribution to Nicomedia".
