Coin ID #5863

Tyana (AD 98-117) AE 26 - Trajan

Trajan, 98-117 AD. AE26 (13.86g), struck under legate T. Pomponius Bassus 98/99 AD (year 1). AVT NEPOVAC TPAIAN KAICAP ΓEP, draped, cuirassed and laureate bust right / EΠI BA - CCOV ΠPECBEVT - TVANEΩN, Tyche of Tyana, in long garment and wearing mural-crown, standing left on cippus, holding two grain-ears in extended right hand and resting with left hand on cippus; beneath, river-god Lamus swimming right; in left and right field ET - A (year 1). Rare, F/good F. Hoeft coll.

Tyana was situated on a tributary of the river Lamus. Because the river-god sometimes holds a torch it seems to be the river Phoibos (Note of Prof. Nolle in R. Falter, Fluß- und Berggötter in der Antike)
