Sagalassos (AD 253-260) AE 33 - Valerian I

Valerian I, 253-260 AD. AE33 -10 Assaria (18.15g). Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / Clasped hands. VF, brown-green patina, minor roughness. Wagner Coll.; ex Mabbott Coll. (Schulman, 6/1969), 2076.

Sagalassus enjoyed a tremendous boost in prosperity during the 3rd century. Although the specific occasion is not noted, sometime during the reign of Trajan Decius the city’s honorifics were expanded to “Sagalassus the First City of Pisidia, Beloved and Ally of Rome”, and extensive series of 10 and 6 assaria were struck for the city through the reign of Claudius II Gothicus.
