Ancient Greek and Roman coins from Asia Minor

Coin ID #4229

(BC 340-334) Pixodaros - Tetradrachm

Pixodaros, Satrap, 340-334 BC. AR Tetradrachm (15.10g, 12h). Head of Apollo facing slightly right, wearing laurel wreath / ΠΙΞΟΔΑΡΟΥ, Zeus Labraundos standing right, holding labrys and lotus-tipped scepter; small E between feet and sceptre. EF, toned, some minor roughness on the reverse. Very rare. Cohen Coll.

The obverse die on this coin was also used to strike tetradrachms in the name of Hidrieus. The die sharing and the carry-over from Hiedreius' issues of the small E on the reverse suggest that Pixodaros' tetradrachms were struck early in his reign.
