Ancient Greek and Roman coins from Asia Minor

Coin ID #10648

Stratonikeia (AD 138-161) AE 35 - Antoninus Pius & Marcus Aurelius

Antoninus Pius, with Marcus Aurelius as Caesar, 138-161 AD. AE35 (30.60g, 5h). Athenokles, magistrate. Laureate bust of Antoninus Pius right, vis-à-vis bareheaded and draped bust of Marcus Aurelius left / Zeus Panamarus right on horse; lighted and garlanded altar to right. VF, black-green patina with traces of olive and red, a few adjustment marks. Fine style portraits. Apparently the second known and possibly the only one not in a public collection. Group CEM.

The specimen Imhoof-Blumer cited was from his own collection. Because of the coin’s rarity, it was probably donated to the Berlin Münzkabinett, as it does not appear in the known sales of Imhoof-Blumer’s coins. The Berlin collection, however, remains unpublished, so there is no way of determining that coin’s further disposition.
