Ancient Greek and Roman coins from Asia Minor

Coin ID #4625

Aizanis (AD 177-192) AE 27 - Commodus

Commodus, 177-192 AD. AE27 (11.03g). Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right / Goat standing left, head turned right, suckling the infant Zeus. VF, black patina with some earthen encrustation. Wagner Coll.

Although little is known of the city of Aezanis, it must have claimed some connection with Amaltheia, the she-goat which nursed the infant Zeus hidden from his father Saturn.
