Ancient Greek and Roman coins from Asia Minor

Coin ID #10563

Silandos (AD 198-217) AE 29 - Caracalla

Caracalla, 198-217 AD. AE29 (11.95g, 6h). Helenos, magistrate. Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / Dionysus standing left, holding cantharus over panther in right hand, filleted thyrsus in left. VF, pale green patina, pit filled in with earthen deposits on reverse.

This obverse die was also used for coins of Acrasus (see SNG von Aulock 2887). The engraver seems to have run out of room at the end of the obverse legend and was forced to place the “C” of “ΑNωNINOC” above the “O”.
