Ancient Greek and Roman coins from Asia Minor

Coin ID #1038

(BC 282-263) Philetairos I - Tetradrachm

Philetairos I, 282-263 BC, struck ca 263 BC (possibly lifetime or by successor nephew Eumenes I). AR Tetradrachm (17.02g). Pergamon mint. Head of Philetairos right, wearing taenia / ΦΙΛΕΤΑΙΡΟΥ, Athena enthroned left, resting right hand on shield and left elbow on sphinx, ivy leaf in inner left field, A on throne, bow in right field. Good VF.

There is speculation from hoard evidence that these coins were issued in the late part of Philetairos' reign - the taenia on the head is of interest in this regard.
